João Costa holds a PhD in Linguistics from University of Leiden in the Netherlands and has been a visiting researcher at MIT. He is a Full Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the Nova University of Lisbon. Until November 2015, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Nova University of Lisbon and President of the Scientific Council of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Science and Technology Foundation.
Now serving as Minister of Education, he has also been a visiting professor at a number of universities in Brazil, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, President of the Portuguese Linguistic Association, and a member of the Scientific Council of the National Reading Plan, the National Commission of the International Institute for the Portuguese Language, and the Consulting Council of the Camões Institute.
